The Soda Fountain Through The Years

Original Soda Fountain - 1960
Old slide taken by Myrtice Preston,
Lem's mother-in-law.
When Medical Center Pharmacy first opened it's doors in the Spring of 1960, the Soda Fountain was located on the back wall of the store. (the Pharmacy Department was then located at the front of the store where the Gift Department is now.) It had 3 stools at the counter and 2 booths.
Back then our menu was: Hot Dogs (good old Robbin's Hot Dogs), homemade chicken salad and homemade pimento cheese for sandwiches.
Cokes, coffee, and milkshakes.
The store was much smaller then. You can tell where the old store 'ended' by looking at the ceiling in the present store.

OLD Photo - Soda Fountain
moved to South wall.
We enlarged the store and remodeled with new floor (note the red and green tile in the photo.) and fixtures. The Pharmacy Department was moved to the back of the store. The Soda Fountain was moved to the side wall. We had a counter without any stools and only one booth! The menu was enlarged and other items added. We thought this would be enough to last. WRONG! This was mostly take outs. Business was good!
1984

Soda Shoppe with
Quail Prints on the Wall.
Once again we 'remodeled' the store. The big addition was a small restaurant added behind the Prescription Department. The menu is now very large. There are 'Specials' each week. The 'locals' love to 'eat and visit.' The Homemade Chicken Salad and Homemade Pimento Cheese sandwiches are still the favorites. (Along with 'Cherry Cokes and 'made from scratch' Lemonade and Orangeade'.)

When the main part of the store was gutted at remodeled, the Soda Shoppe got a new paint color to match the rest of the store. (At some point it had been painted green.) Those awful quail prints that were put there in 1984 (obviously a 'guy decision') were replaced with copies of OLD black and white photographs that were enlarged and hand colored by a local artist. (George Lewis) These photos bring back many memories for our patrons while enjoying their meals.
